Day 2. Kigali-Akagera National Park-Kigali

Early in the morning, embark on a journey to the eastern part of Rwanda to explore Akagera National Park, nestled along the border with Tanzania. This diverse terrain serves as a habitat for a wide array of wildlife, including zebras, giraffes, elephants, lions, and a plethora of bird species, including the rare shoebill stork.

In the southern part of the park, the expansive Lake Ihema is home to hippos and crocodiles, adding to the rich biodiversity of the area. Ensure your camera is fully charged to capture the breathtaking moments and wildlife encounters in Akagera National Park.

Later in the day, return to your hotel in Kigali, reflecting on the unforgettable experiences and the natural wonders witnessed during your exploration of this unique and captivating national park.

Day 3-4. Kigali-Lake Kivu-Kigali (2 days in Kibuye with bed and breakfast accomodation)

This morning, after enjoying breakfast at your hotel, we will embark on a journey towards Lake Kivu, approximately a 3-hour drive from the capital, Kigali. Lake Kivu is situated on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, within the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift. It flows into the Ruzizi River, which further travels southwards into Lake Tanganyika.

You'll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the tranquility and scenic beauty of Lake Kivu during a 2-night stay. Explore the lake by taking a boat ride to nearby islands, including Napoleon Island (named for its resemblance to Napoleon's hat), Mbabara Island where coffee and macadamia nuts thrive, and the majestic Peace Island, offering a peaceful and picturesque experience.

As part of this itinerary, we will also visit the Genocide Memorial Church. Kibuye, where Lake Kivu is located, suffered significantly during the 1994 genocide. The town was considered a Tutsi stronghold, and for years, it lacked proper road access. Within walking distance from the town center, there is a large hill-top church serving as a memorial to over 11,000 people who lost their lives. This somber site stands in stark contrast to the present-day relaxed and welcoming environment.

After two days of exploration and relaxation at Lake Kivu, you will be transferred back to your hotel in Kigali, marking the end of this 5-day tour of Rwanda.
